The Doctor Who "movie" does exactly what it's meant to do. It's a nicely done little film that will please most hardcore fans as well as complete Doctor Who newbies. The great asset of this film is the fact that it works so well for a wide audience. The viewer isn't required to know anything about the Doctor Who universe to enjoy this film, and at the same time, someone intimately familiar with it won't feel talked down to. Just like with anything else with a history, a fan will probably notice things other people wouldn't. There are little allusions and homages to the old TV series woven into the film, but these aren't crucial to enjoying it. Despite the obvious differences in production and budget (among other things), the Doctor Who "movie" manages to keep in the same spirit as the original TV series. It is both scary and funny at the same time. In addition to that, you'll surely notice many beautiful shots and nicely cut scenes. There are several precious memorable moments that will probably make you smile, and overall, it is a highly enjoyable film. Doctor Who 1996 is a high quality family film with a fun story, and it's pleasure to watch. It will probably be something you will want to come back to after you've seen it.
