Despicable Me 3 suffers from the curse of the sequel. Unfortunately, this is to be expected from a film ending with a numeral. This film may be a disappointment, but it is not a complete failure. The plot is sufficiently interesting to make it worth your time if you're looking for an easy-to-watch animated comedy, and there are a few good moments. On the other hand, the established characters are dealt with in an overly simplistic manner, and what is supposed to look like interesting character progressions dealing with real-life issues is, in fact, insultingly reductionist, and even younger viewers will see right through it. The music is quite good, but sadly reuses many of the songs from the first film. Along with its other failings and certain plot and character aspects, the resulting effect is that this film looks like a washed-out attempt at recreating the original. Unfortunately, it entirely misses what made the first film so good. If you liked the first film and want to keep up with the series or if you just want an easy laugh, Despicable Me 3 might be worth it, but you won't be likely to be in any hurry to ever re-watch it.
