The term "cult classic" doesn't quite do justice to Withnail and I, because it suggests that it is a marginal - "cult" - thing, when in reality, it most definitely is one of the best films ever produced. First of all, the actors really prove the scope of their skills in this film. The opening scene will make you completely engaged in the story. The characters are very real and believable, which is amazing for this type of black comedy film. Among other things, the film captures a specific emotion that everybody who was young once can identify with, and this creates the beautiful timelessness that makes it so special. To put it all into one word, Withnail and I is a film about changes. The film is extremely well shot. There is a lot of humour coming from the camera angle and background action, and that is just one of the many layers to watch out for. It is refreshing to see a film that isn't solely based on funny one-liners, though Withnail and I still offers many memorable moments. From a technical perspective, this film is amazing. The foreshadowing techniques it uses are very subtle and elegant, and they make the story advance at a pace that feels just right. Withnail and I is a beautiful story in film form, and if cinematography could talk, it would say it feels proud of it, because this film is its perfect child.
