Mars Attacks!

Mars Attacks! can be best described by these words: hilarious and misunderstood.

It is a very interesting dark comedy. The plot is absurd, and yet easy to follow. There is some lovely play on various clichés, making it a parody of the genre, which adds to the dark, yet humorous atmosphere. The whole cast are practically just cameo appearances, but this works very well within the story, and it's funny. An interesting detail to note is that this is one of the few comedies that actually foreshadow their jokes. It is packed with little memorable moments that will make you smile whenever you remember them.

Besides being funny, there is also a lot of social criticism hidden in this picture, but it is far from being pretentious. A thing to be noted: It's rated PG-13, but that might be an understatement. There is a lot of violence and some slightly unsettling shots. Nothing that would definitely mean that a 13-year old can't see it, but it might simply go better with older people.

You might be a bit surprised if you don't know what to expect, but Mars Attacks! was definitely made by people who knew what they were doing. It is a high quality comedy like none other.
