Maybe Baby

The problem of Maybe Baby is that it is a bit too predictable. It is a relatively enjoyable film and it has some interesting moments, but as a whole it doesn't really work.

The idea is interesting, because it is a film about making a film. This, however, could have been taken further, and the true potential of the story within a story technique hasn't been explored. There are some good scenes where words said relate to a different layer of the plot, but overall, there just isn't enough.

The structure of the film will most likely produce mixed feelings. About three quarters of it is good and well paced, while the ending seems either too rushed or too long. The big structural difference between the two parts makes the story seem unfinished, but not in a good way. There seem to be too many loose ends - characters that never come back, for example, and this makes Maybe Baby look a bit confused and weak as a story.

It is difficult to identify what this picture is really trying to do. It seems like a film playing with the idea of private vs. public and appropriate vs. inappropriate, but these are not taken far enough. It is aiming high and failing, but we can still identify some merit in it. Watch it or not, it wouldn't really matter either way.
